Secant
A series of minimalist lights by Daniel Rybakken for J. Hill’s Standard, the Secant Collection is defined by hand-cut crystal discs suspended within a refined metal framework. This skeletal structure, formed from lathed, anodized aluminum, links the glass to the light engine and the wall or surface below—creating a striking visual and tactile contrast with the crystal.
The integrated LED light source does not illuminate the disc directly. Instead, it is angled toward the surface behind or beneath the fixture, allowing light to reflect and diffuse back through the glass, softly illuminating the surrounding space.
The Secant Collection explores contrast—between weight and lightness, fragility and force, the handmade and the industrial. Secant is a study in equilibrium, where opposites not only meet, but rely on one another.

About the designer
Daniel Rybakken
Daniel Rybakken (1984) is a Norwegian designer whose work exists at the intersection of art, technology, and the emotional experience of light. Educated in Oslo and Gothenburg, he established his studio in 2008 and quickly garnered international recognition for his poetic approach to form and illumination.
Rybakken’s practice spans limited editions, installations, and serial production—each piece exploring the perception of light and its subtle psychological effects. His research-driven approach has led to objects that emulate the qualities of daylight, blurring the line between functional design and meditative experience.
He has received numerous accolades, including the Red Dot “Best of the Best” Award, the Anders Jahre Cultural Prize, and the Design Report Award at SaloneSatellite. Across disciplines and mediums, Rybakken continues to illuminate how we see, sense, and feel.
